1. Amherst College

Women's & Gender Studies, PO Box 5000, 14 Grosvenor Hse CB 2257, Amherst, MA 01002 http://www.amherst.edu

Open-Rank Position: Gender, Images, and Textualities in the Global South  [8936]

The Amherst College Department of Women's and Gender Studies seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (tenure-track or tenured) to begin in the fall of 2010. "Images and Textualities" suggests a focus on interactive media, such as written or printed texts, pictures (including art) or film; the Global South is defined as Africa, the Middle East, Asia or Latin America. The person hired must have completed her/his PhD, in a humanities discipline, by the time of appointment. A degree from an interdisciplinary program such as Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies, Black Studies, Cultural Studies, Film/Media Studies or the various Area Studies would be acceptable provided the person's main expertise is in the humanities. We would also entertain applications from social scientists with a strong humanities focus, though our already existing strengths in history and political science preclude hiring in those two fields.

The teaching load is two courses per semester. All members of the Women's and Gender Studies department participate in teaching required departmental courses, offer both lower and upper division courses in their area of expertise, and oversee honors theses. College-wide emphasis on writing encourages us to favor applicants with an interest, if not actual experience, in teaching writing. Strong commitments to scholarship and to undergraduate teaching, especially to working with a diverse student body, are essential.

Applicants should submit the following materials electronically to wags@amherst.edu: a letter of application that outlines the candidate's scholarly and teaching interests; a curriculum vitae; and a one-page description of an interdisciplinary course (either upper or lower division) that the candidate would like to teach that fits broadly into the topic-area of Gender, Images, and Textualities in the Global South (writing samples should not be sent at this time). Candidates should also arrange for three (3) letters of recommendation to be sent either electronically to wags@amherst.edu or in hard copy to: Media Search, Department of Women's and Gender Studies, Box 2257, Amherst College, Amherst, MA 01002-5000. Candidates whose application file is complete (including the three outside letters of recommendation) on or before November 15, 2009, will be assured full consideration. We expect to interview our shortlist at the MLA convention in Philadelphia, PA (Dec. 27-30, 2009). Inquiries may be directed to Amy Ford, Academic Coordinator, Women's and Gender Studies Department, wags@amherst.edu.

Assistant Professor Positions in English Without Borders  [8601]

The Texas A&M Department of English is currently focusing on English without Borders as a research area of emphasis and investment. In literary terms, English without Borders means the transnational study of literature, language, and cultural practices in English with special attention to contact zones and contested discourses where national and geographic boundaries are in flux. Within British literature and cultural studies, it includes postcolonial studies and "literatures in English." In American literature, it touches on trans-Atlantic studies; North American, "New World," or hemispheric literatures; African diasporic discourse; and immigrant and ethnic writing. English without Borders also aims to interrogate the discipline of English and to expand its scope, to include new media, digital technologies, popular culture, non-western, vernacular, and indigenous traditions in writing and performance. Building upon established strengths in British and American literature and recent hires in ethnic, diasporic, postcolonial, immigrant, transnational, non-western literature and rhetoric, digital humanities, and film, we are looking to promote scholarship that features or blends a range of interests in English-language literature and culture.

With prospects for further hiring in the near future, we plan to fill three assistant professorships this year. The department invites letters of interest in any area of scholarship and teaching that will contribute to advancing our English without Borders initiative. More specifically, we are interested in one or more of the following fields:

1. Children's and/or Adolescent Literature and Culture with research interests that might include bilingual literature, translation and cross-cultural reception, diasporic and ethnic literature, interdisciplinarity (including but not limited to cultural studies, publishing studies, or literature and the sociology of childhood), the interplay between high and low culture and/or among different literary periods, multiple and/or new media.

2. Rhetoric and Composition with research interests in Latina/o and/or indigenous culture and rhetoric, diasporic and ethnic rhetorics, nonwestern rhetoric, and/or new media/digital studies in rhetoric and writing.

3. Film Studies with research interests that might include international and/or ethnic cinema; film's relationship to other media; relations among media audiences (e.g., child v. adult); cross-genre and cross/media studies of narrative, media and social change.

Candidates should say specifically how their work advances the research initiative in English without Borders.

Salary and teaching load are competitive. Faculty teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialty and receive significant departmental research support, including travel funds. Applicant must have a Ph.D. or be eligible to obtain the Ph.D. by August 2010, the position start date.

Minorities and women scholars are strongly encouraged to apply. Texas A&M is an AA/EEO employer, is deeply committed to diversity, and responds to the needs of dual-career couples. Visit our website at http://www-english.tamu.edu/ for more information about the department and the university.

The Search Committees will begin to review applications immediately. Send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and dossier with three letters of recommendation and an article-length writing sample. Applicants for all positions should send materials to: Patricia Phillippy, Chair / Search Committee / Department of English / Texas A&M University / 4227 TAMU / College Station, TX 77843-4227. To be assured of full consideration, applications must be postmarked no later than November 1, 2009. Interviews will be conducted at MLA. [R]
